Cordova Airport Rehabilitation and Fencing

Cordova Airport Runway Rehabilitation Project

Purpose and Need

The purpose of the proposed project is to upgrade existing aviation facilities to meet current FAA standards and ensure safe and reliable use of the Cordova Airport. The project is needed as the primary east/west runway (09/27) pavement is degraded and beyond its useful life, creating safety deficiencies with uneven surfaces and ponding water. The lighting system is beyond its useful life and provides inconsistent lighting intensity.

Project Description

The proposed project is anticipated to include:

  • Rehabilitation of Runway 9/27 and adjacent safety areas
  • Rehabilitation of portions of taxiways
  • Replacing the Runway 9 Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS)
  • Replacing runway and taxiway culverts and removing non-standard inlets
  • Replacing all Runway 9/27 edge lighting, signage, and related electrical infrastructure
  • Improvements to affected Navigational Aids (NAVAIDS) Lighting Improvements

Material Sites and Staging Areas

Both projects will be staged on airport property on previously developed or disturbed areas. Material for both projects is anticipated to be sourced from existing, permitted material sites and would be included in the environmental review of the project:

  • Existing material site (Sheridan Glacier) on airport property may be expanded to obtain sufficient material for the project.
  • Existing material site (Flag Point) approximately 13 miles east on land owned by the Alaska Department of Natural Resources may be used to obtain sufficient material for the project. Expansion of the material site is not anticipated.
